African American Culture Honored in NYC Public Art (Virtual)

A virtual lecture with art historian Sylvia Laudien-Meo. Public art throughout New York City includes a recent marker for the original slave market, the African Burial Ground, which was rediscovered in the 1990s and now graced with a very impressive memorial, several controversial 19th century sculptures representing African Americans, and in recent times, public art honoring people like Sojourner Truth, Harriet Tubman, Frederick Douglass. Artists covered in this talk include Pope L., Martin Puryear, Kara Walker, Hank Willis Thomas, Nari Ward, Simone Leigh and others. Register here.
