All That's Left in the World by Erik J. Brown
All That’s Left in the World by Erik J. Brown is the story of the journey of two survivors of a super-virus, Jamison and Andrew, who stumble upon each other one fateful day. Two characters who are both equally mysterious with sorrowful pasts, come together to search for answers after a pandemic wipes out most of the human population. Through meeting several people along the way and encountering numerous challenges, Jamison and Andrew soon discover each other's past and the truth about the current world.
Erik J. Brown’s novel conveys a lovely story of two troubled characters who find comfort in each other when the world around them has collapsed. This story is particularly relatable because its setting resembles the early days of the pandemic when it did feel like the world was collapsing (except in the novel 80% of the population is gone). It displays how life in a post-apocalyptic world brings death, heartbreak, sadness, and an unknown fate. This book ends chapters with cliffhangers and secrets. In addition, through the changes in perspective of each chapter between Jamison and Andrew, it makes each chapter more interesting and engaging.
In contrast, a significant theme in this novel is humor. Although strange for such a setting, it displays how in a dark world, having humor and love can make everything a lot brighter. Due to the many allusions that reference real world people and movies, it adds more to the realism of this post-pandemic world. Overall, this story is a 3.5 out of 5 and quite a wholesome read.
